Navigating Cross-Currents:
Establishing a Crisis Management Protocol
Abstract
Resident directors frequently experience and have to resolve challenges abroad involving American students. But these challenges are complicated when the abroad program is located in Cuba. Given the sensitive and politicized nature of the relationship between Cuba and the United States, resident directors must skillfully and carefully balance a commitment to student safety with maintaining a positive relationship with the host university. When an American student is sexually assaulted the resident director must think independently and be resourceful and supportive of the student.
